Characterization- Mrs. Reed
"Her mother was my husband's sister. On his death bed he exorted me to care for her. I've always treated her as one of my own. If you accept her at Lowood school, Mr. Brocklehurst, keep a strict eye on her. She has a heart of spite. I'm sorry to say that her worst fault is that of deceit" (35).
Mrs. Reed was a cruel, deceitful lady with a jealousy against Jane, she treated Jane with no remorse, and was seen as the "bad guy"of the novel. although we are well aware of the way Mrs. Reed treats Jane, we don't learn much about her as a character. we are not giving any background information on why Mrs. Reed is so cold towards Jane. This being said Mrs. Reed is a flat Character in the novel. Also Mrs. Reed is a very static character, she does not changer her ways throughout the book, Jane goes to meet Mrs. Reed while she falls ill and is on her "death bed" after several years Mrs. Reed still treats Jane with utter disgust.

The quote you used to describe Mrs. Reed personality towards Jane is a perfect example on how Mrs. Reed acted. She was a cruel lady, especially towards Jane. I think the fact that you brought up the point that we do not know Mrs. Reed ad more of a character than on who is mean to Jane is an accurate statement. I think you could have improved your post by going into more detail and giving more examples on how Mrs. Reed treated Jane. Overall you did a really good job on this log post!
ReplyDeletei like your word choice and quote, they both add to the passage. When talking about her death bed and how she hasn't changed maybe you could back that up with a quote.
