Allusions- Psalms

'"Psalms are not interesting,' I remarked. 'That proves you have a wicked heart; and you must pray to god to change it: to give you a new and clean one: to take away your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh'" (26).

During Jane's childhood she makes this statement about Psalms and her lack of interest in them, shocked by her remark and reference to the Psalms Mr. Brockelhurst  explains to Jane that she is a cruel human and must find forgiveness to be saved.

  1. Good, but why do you think Brontë incorporated the Psalms at this point in the novel?
